Mexico’s Top Eco Parks
You’ve probably heard of Mexico’s famous Eco Parks or Water Parks but what are they all really like? What do they have to contribute to your Mexican Caribbean vacation?
In this article, you will find a detailed description of Mexico’s best Water Parks and what they have to offer your traveling party’s unique personalities. Here you will be exploring which one of the parks or “parks” you would like to add to your Things To Do in Mexico list.
If you have questions; I have answers.
*Hint: The best way to make sure you have the best Mexico Vacation is to utilize a Travel Agent.
Let's Go On An Adventure
Mexico’s Top Eco Parks
A true adventure for the whole family, great for adults and children alike, these Eco Parks a.k.a. Adventure Parks a.k.a. Water Parks, reveal the Riviera Maya’s natural wonders. The Yucatan Peninsula has many secrets which you just don’t see at your resort.
These parks are a fun and safe way to get acquainted with the animals and marine life in and around the Mayan Riviera.
Mexico has multiple Eco Parks near Mexico’s Caribbean Coast but I’m just going to go over the Top 4, Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor and Garrafon Natural Reef Park.
-
1. Xcaret
Xcaret Eco Archaeological Park is the most visited of all 4 of the Eco Parks. It has great amenities for the little ones.
-
2. Xel-Ha
Xel Ha Ecological Park has more things for an older, adventure seeking traveler, while still having room for relaxation and a kiddie park.
-
3. Xplor
Xplor Adventure Park is for that adrenalin junkie explorer. Packed full of heart pounding options to choose from.
-
4. Garrafon Natural Reef Park
Garrafon Natural Reef Park has a lot to offer every age and personality type. If you are staying in Cancun or Isla Mujeres, this is a great option.
In these eco parks you’ll be able to experience hidden gems such as jungle wildlife, cenote inhabitants and the ocean’s creatures and marine life.
Watch your children’s eyes open wide with excitement while all along learning. Bingo!
Let's Go On An Adventure
Mexico’s Top Eco Parks
1. Xcaret Eco Archaeological Park
Spend time with the family while getting close to nature and experiencing the history of Xcaret.
Xcaret meaning, “small inlet” is a water park that opened in 1990. Mayans used these water ways first as a merchandise port due to the fact that small portions of the Caribbean Sea enter into the land. It is fun to think back in time while you meander down these rivers, which I cover in more detail, later in this article.
Xcaret Eco Park is located between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen and is quite possibly, the most visited of the 4 Eco parks.
Plan to spend an entire day exploring this piece of paradise because it has so many attractions. Xcaret boasts 50 natural and cultural attractions such as swimming with dolphins to the Butterfly Pavilion. From swimming down the underground river or cenote, to visiting the Coral Reef Aquarium and so much more. There are even performances scheduled throughout the day. The Xcaret México Espectacular and Pre-Hispanic Dances are the best, in my opinion.
How Much Does Xcaret Cost?
There are 3 ways to book your Eco Park adventure. The 1st being through your Travel Agent, the 2nd being through Xcaret website and the 3rd being through your resort.
Below, I have broken down the pricing of Xcaret for you. The upfront costs as well as any extras you may encounter or add.
- Adult (ages 12+) $98.99USD
- Child (ages 5-11): $49.49USD
- Children ages 4 and under are free.
- Adult (ages 12+) $122.0USD

- Children ages 4 and under are free.
- Food & Beverage: $27.00USD
- Photo Pass: $58.99USD
- Transportation: $27.00USD
*The Photo Pass is good for all group pictures taken of the group up to 10 people that are registered at the time of ticket purchases.
*Transportation cost will differ depending on where your resort is.
- Towels: Fee: $3.99USD Deposit: $10.00USD
- Snorkel Equipment: Fee: $10.99USD Deposit: $25.00USD
- Snorkel Equipment (Admission Plus): Fee: Free Deposit: $10.00USD
- Lockers: Fee: $5.99USD Deposit: $10.00USD
- Single Strollers: Fee: $16.99USD Deposit: $30.00USD
- Double Strollers: Fee: $21.99USD Deposit: $40.00USD
- Wheel Chairs: Fee: $21.99USD Deposit: $40.00USD
- Electric Wheelchair: Fee: $37.99USD Deposit: $55.00USD
*All pricing and inclusions are intended for a guide only not as official pricing.
Single and double strollers as well as wheel chairs are available for rent near the front gate. Have no worries, it is quite easy to still navigate the park with strollers and wheel chairs.
Ultimately, you will know what is the best plan for you and your family as well as budget but I hope the pricing information above has helped. I find it better than being shell shocked.

What Does My Xcaret Admission Include?
Your Xcaret Regular Admission and Admission Plus includes 50 some odd attractions including Life Jackets, Inner Tubes, Parking, Free WiFi, the Espectacular Presentation and the fabulous child play park.
The difference between the two are that the Xcarat Plus includes gets you a buffet with 1 alcoholic beverage with your meal, use of the Plus locker rooms at the underground rivers as well as free snorkel equipment.
Please note the fees and deposits for everything under “Extras” above.
We had our own snorkeling gear so we didn’t need that but we did add the meal plan and of course the Photo Pass. You will want the Photo Pass so go ahead and plan on that one.
What is The Difference Between Regular & Plus Admission?
The difference between the Regular Admission and Xcaret Plus Admission which includes the meal plan, explained below, as well as access to Plus Area Exclusive Facilities with lockers, dressing rooms, private restrooms, and the use of snorkel gear for the underground rivers.
Since this is a full day adventure, I recommend adding the meal plan to your admission ticket which you’ll receive a buffet meal and unlimited drinks.
Note that there is no outside food or drinks allowed. There are a few sit down restaurants on site if you chose not to add the meal plan.
What Is A Photo Pass?
The Photo Pass is good for up to 10 people in your group that are signed up at time of purchase.
This option is so cool because they give you wrist bands that you wave in front of strategically placed cameras around the park and your picture is taken.
So, when your group splits up to do their own thing at Xcaret, you still get the pictures. It is an awesome idea.

Things To Do At Xcaret
Swimming the Underground Rivers or, cenotes, are the main attraction at Xcaret. The Blue River, the Mayan River, and the Manatee River are the 3 underground rivers that wind through Xcaret and empty into the ocean. You won’t be swimming to the ocean, just to clarify. Wfew!
These rivers are about 16.5 feet underground and about 5 ft deep with intermittent exits. Be sure to soak in all of the beauty that surrounds you.
Expect an hour to finish swimming the river unless you decide to exit early at any number of the early exits.
Life jackets are required to swim the rivers and they are free to use. They even have baby life jackets if you brought the smallest part of your crew.
The staff will place your belonging in a duffle bag with a lock that only you will have the key to so don’t lose it. Once you have finished your river tour you can retrieve your items with your key.
The underground rivers are simply spectacular.
Regular Admission Ticket Holders: You will need to change at the main locker facility at the front and bring your own towel as well as rent snorkel gear for around $11/12.00 USD or bring your own.
Xcaret Admission Plus Ticket Holders: You are able to utilize the facilities next to the underground river entrance and the snorkel equipment is included.
- Park Hours of Operation: 8:30am-10:30pm
- Use Biodegradable sunscreen to protect wildlife and preserve this beauty for generations to come.

2. Xel-Ha
Xel Ha, pronounced Shel-Ha, is one of the most popular snorkeling location near Cancun.
Part of the Xcaret family, Xel-Ha is a huge inlet made up of multiple little finger rivers jutting out in different directions and deep swimming holes.
This Eco park differs from Xcaret in that it seemed a little more adult friendly with Ziplining, Zip Bikes, Cliff Jumping, water slides, snorkeling, swimming and extra activities that you can add on like a super-fast speed boat named Adrenalina, Sea Trek, Snuba and more which I’ll go over later.
A natural lagoon that is home to sea turtles, and dozens of species of fish. Small beaches and hangouts are a great and relaxing place to spend a day during your vacation.
How Much Does Xel-Ha Cost?
A BIG difference between Xel-Ha and Xcaret is that almost everything is included in your admission ticket, which I have outlined below.
I like this because I am big on knowing what I am getting up front. This is one of the reasons I wrote this article.
- Adult (ages 12+) $89.99USD
- Child (ages 5-11): $44.99USD
- Children ages 4 and under are free.
- Adult (ages 12+) $122.00
- Child (ages 5-11): $84.00
- Children ages 4 and under are free.
- Photo Pass: $58.99USD
- Transportation: $27.00USD
*The Photo Pass is good for all group pictures taken of the group up to 10 people that are registered at the time of ticket purchases.
*Transportation cost will differ depending on where your resort is.
- Power Xnorkel: $62.99USD
- Under Water Sea Trek: $58.49USD
- Adrenaline Boat: $53.99USD
- Snuba Cenote: $44.99USD
- Zip Bike: $32.99 USD
*All pricing and inclusions are intended for a guide only not as official pricing.

So, when your group splits up to do their own thing at Xel-Ha, you still get the pictures. It is an awesome idea.

What Does My Xel-Ha Admission Include?
Xel-Ha has Regular Admission and Xel-Ha Total. With the Xel-Ha Total Admission you get to choose one extra adventure, Adrenalina, Sea Trek or Snuba.
My husband and I did the Sea Trek together and we just paid a little extra for him to ride Adrenalina.
There really is so much included with your regular admission that you don’t really need to do an add on but, they do give you that extra thrill and memory maker to the Xel-Ha experience, if you choose to do so.
Included
- Snorkeling Equipment
- Inner tubes to float the river
- Waterslides & Observation Tower
- 3 Ziplines
- Cliff Jumps
- Breakfast Buffet
- Lunch buffet
- Snack Bar
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Bicycles
- Children’s Park
Things To Do At Xel-Ha
Xel-Ha Ziplines
There are 3 ziplines into water located throughout the trails and which are short and not high at all but great fun all the same.
The zip-bike is an extra activity option where you cycle for 30 minutes on a line. I wasn’t that interested in it because I’d rather fly through the air but it may be something you want to check out.
Cliff Jumping
Also, on these trails of Xel-Ha, you will come to a cliff hovering about 20 feet from the water.
Yep, go ahead and jump in. First make sure you’re not jumping on top of anybody but I probably didn’t need to tell you that or, at least I hope I didn’t.
After swiping your wrist band there is a light that will tell you when to jump. Well, the light actually does 2 things. It tells you when it’s ok to jump but also triggers a camera that will capture your brave descent to the cool turquois water below.
You can do these activities as many times as you’d like. The ziplines and cliff jumping I did at least 4 times.
So much fun!
Snorkeling, Floating, Relaxing
Take some time to relax and float around in the pristine waters. It’s so refreshing.
Snorkel in the inlet and rivers checking out the underwater life as well as all the rock formations throughout the entirety of Xel-Ha.

Now, What About Those Xtream Extras?
If you are looking for a little more excitement or something a little different to experience; check out one or more of the “Extras”.
I went over the pricing for each add on in the above costs and with the Xel-Ha Total Admission, you get to choose one of 3 extras, Under Water Sea Trek, Adrenalina Speed Boat or Snuba. I want to cover those for you below.
Underwater Sea Trek
Get to know the depths below.
With this adventure a certified guide will take you around the sea floor while you are breathing comfortably through specialized helmet. Holding onto railings secured to the ocean floor you’ll experience the under-water world.
It’s still pretty shallow but you see a lot of fish including a huge Grouper, or at least I thought it was huge, sea turtles and people swimming around. I enjoyed it and got quite a few pictures to remember it by.
The trek is about 25 minutes with a 5-minute instruction equaling 30-minute total time.
Adrenalina Speed Boat
Get excited about this ride.
With 360° turns and full speed dives under the water, yep…dives under the water, this rides name serves it well.
It’s a 30-minute ride with 15 minutes of instruction equaling 45 minutes total time.
They take pictures so don’t forget to check them out. Some of the looks on people’s faces are priceless.
Snuba
This is just like scuba, hence the play on words, but without the tank on your back and weight belt.
You’ll be able to witness the life going on in the inlet under the sea. It’s easy to breath and with the sophisticated gear they provide.
I didn’t do this activity at Xel-Ha but it is a fun adventure.
Snuba is 30 minutes under water and 30 minutes instruction time equaling 1-hour total time.
Now, this idea is simply genius!
There are cameras strategically placed around the park so you are able to take a picture during all of the activities by simply scanning your wrist band.
They are at the ziplines and cliff jumping as well as a lot of other cool places. Just look for the signs and cameras.
The wrist bands and cameras are such a cool feature with this place.
You’ll get a card with a code to download the pictures once you get home. Don’t forget to get your card before you leave the park.

3. Xplor Adventure Park
Another thrilling Eco Park by Xcaret, located about 3.5 miles south of Playa del Carmen is Xplor Adventure Park.
5 Stars for this excursion! Filled with heart pounding adventure and exhilarating activities, it’s wickedly exhausting, in a good way.
Bring It On!
How Much Does Xplor Cost?
Everything is included with this Xtream Adventure Park. Yep everything. Well, except for alcoholic beverages.
There is no need to pay for extra activities or lockers. Do not worry about upgrading to a higher package for food options. A buffet lunch, unlimited snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are already part of regular admission.
I have listed all the pricing for you below.
- Adult (ages 12+) $116.99USD
- Child (ages 5-11): $58.49USD
- Children ages 4 and under are free.
- Photo Pass: $58.99USD
- Transportation: $27.00USD
*The Photo Pass is good for all group pictures taken of the group up to 10 people that are registered at the time of ticket purchases.
*Transportation cost will differ depending on where your resort is.
*All pricing and inclusions are intended for a guide only not as official pricing.
The only exceptions are your Photo Pass and Transportation to and from your resort.

What is Included With My Xplor Admission?
No one, especially me, likes hidden fees or pricing surprises so, I put together a quick list below that shows you what is included with you admission.
Included
- Amphibious Vehicle (ATV)
- Two circuits with 7 ziplines each
- Hammock Splash
- Underground Expedition (this is a new expedition, explore 800 yards of caverns)
- Paddling the Underground River
- Stalactite River Cave Swim
- Spelunking hike
- Unlimited Snacks
- Non-Alcoholic Beverages
- Buffet Lunch
- Locker Rooms
- Free parking
More About Xplor
Xplor is a fairly easy to navigate this park but if you are with a group you may want to make the meeting place by the large heart that’s in the center.
The dressing room and locker area is the first place you’ll head before choosing your fist activity. They are clean and quite nice. The lockers are included so you’ll be able to explore without worrying if your belongings are safe.
The ground can get hot so I recommend wearing water shoes. If you wear flip flops, you’ll most likely lose them during all of the fun. I still brought my flip flops but just wore them until I got to the locker room and when we left Xplore.
The ziplines were more crowded in the morning than the afternoon for us. Wouldn’t you think it was the other way around? So did we. Zip-lines are a lot of fun so I’m guessing that was the first-place people flocked to. Just something to consider.
Anyway, I digress.
Food At Xplor
All of your food, including the snack bar as well as your non-alcoholic beverages are included which is awesome.
The snack shack is open all day and the buffet restaurant, El Troglodita, opens at 11:00am and closes at 5:00pm.
You will wait in line for the buffet so the earlier you eat lunch, the better.
In My Opinion...
I think this park is more extreme than Xel-Ha and I liked Xel-Ha more than Xcaret. Xcaret is good if you have young ones though. Everyone is different but if you are an adrenaline junkie, you picked the right park.
That being said, there are tons of heart pounding activities at Xplore from zip lines and rafting or swimming the underground rivers to amphibious vehicle explorers, from Zip lines to the new Under Water Expedition.
Let's Go On An Adventure
Mexico’s Top Eco Parks
Things To Do At Xplor Adventure Park
Amphibious Vehicles (ATVs):
Drive into the wild on 2 different trails, 3 miles long each.
Expect to scream with freedom and excitement with every turn as you splash through water logged caverns, bumping along on rough terrain, and maneuvering up steep and narrow roads.
It is so much fun and you’ll get some good pictures from this one.
Xplor's Ziplines
Experience the jungle of Playa Del Carmen by flying high above the canopy through 2 zipline circuits of 7 lines each, a total of 2.4 miles.
Do these as many times as you like, we were able to do the ziplines 2 times but I think that was because we found the lines were shorter later in the day. Keep in mind though that this was our experience. Some have said the lines are longer later in the day, that just wasn’t our experience.
Hammock Splash
This is a zipline with essentially a hammock instead of a harness connected to it. You’ll slide down and splash into a cenote at the bottom.
Don’t worry, it’s safe. I’m still here.
Raft The Underground River
I’m laughing just remembering this one.
The rafts aren’t what you would picture when someone says “raft”. The best way I can explain it is as an “ancient raft”.
Rafting the underground river is a beautiful experience with clear crystal turquois water accenting the stalactites and the tan of the cave. You’ll use your hands to make your way through the cave so it’s a little tricky but fun all the same.
Swimming The Underground River
If paddling a raft is not your cup of tea but you don’t want to miss out on the charm of the cave; you can opt to just swim through the cavern.
A bonus for swimming the cave is the water is a cool and refreshing break from the heated activities above.

Garrafon Natural Reef Park V.I.P. Lounge
If you’re wanting an added touch of luxury to you already adventurous day at Garrafon Natural Reef Park, you can upgrade to VIP or VIP Premium.
The only difference between the two is that the VIP Premium gets to choose from an exclusive menu at the Big Fish Restaurant. When we visited the Premium option was only able to be added at the park. I’m not a fan of sea food so I wouldn’t have benefited from this extra upgrade on top of an upgrade.
The VIP Lounge is its own exclusive area that boasts an infinity pool and jacuzzi surrounded with lounge chairs and beds. When we were there, it was adults only which if your kid free it is a plus to have a splash free zone to relax.
While lounging in the infinity pool, your eyes relish in the awe-inspiring panoramic view. The View Restaurant is also located in this premium zone where you’ll enjoy the VIP buffet and Blue Fish which is a special menu for VIP Premium.

Relaxation
If you’re ready to relax; soak up the beauty of the Sculpture Garden, take a break in a hammock or just lay in a cabana and listen to the hypnotic sound of the ocean waves.
Make sure to schedule some healing time by booking a Temazcal session. Temazcal meaning “House of Heat” is a type of low heat sweat lodge. In ancient Mesoamerica, these pre-Hispanic steam baths were used as a therapeutic and spiritual curative ceremony thought to purify the body after exertion.
The Temazcal is a great experience and very relaxing. I recommend checking this out first due to availability because this is something you don’t want to miss out on while you’re visiting Garrafon Natural Reef Park.
